Re: Payets freekick
Interesting insight from the main man!

The West Ham attacking midfielder produced another moment of dead-ball brilliance against Crystal Palace last weekend to add to a growing collection of spectacular strikes during his debut season in England.

Payet has scored with free-kicks against Bournemouth, Blackburn, Manchester United and also for France in their friendly with Russia but insists the key has been to trust in a technique he has honed until the Hammers’ visit to Dean Court on January 12.

“I worked very hard on taking them earlier in the season up until the Bournemouth game when I scored,” said Payet. “Since that game I have not been practising as I have been happy with the way I am hitting the ball so I am carrying on with that technique and now I just take a few before each game when I am warming up.

“I was quite lucky against Palace as I did have one free-kick earlier in the game that went over but I saw that the keeper had moved slightly over to the other side so when I had another free-kick I decided to slightly change it and that was a good choice.
“I must say I was surprised by how the ball travelled and usually I can tell when I hit it if it is going to go in and I can sometimes celebrate before hand but with this one I thought it was going over but it then dropped in.

“I am enjoying a very good period at the moment in terms of free-kicks. I am full of confidence and that allows me to try out these new things. The ball seems to be going in at the moment which is great for all of us.”

Re: Payets freekick
With his accuracy, and no wall to hinder him, you have to assume the ball will be top corner or very near. The keeper can only stand pretty much in the middle. Very risky.

The 7 men wall would have been better placed along the goal line with the keeper in front.

Re: Payets freekick
Yes, I know that Lily, which is why the defenders wouldn't be back on the halfway line.

All I'm hypothesising here is that NOT having a wall could work in certain situations where a wall is put up by default.

His freekick on Saturday for example. Exactly what good did having a 7 man wall do?

None. The only thing it contributed was the keeper being completely unsighted and assuming the ball was going to his right because that's where Payet has hit them before. By the time he actually saw the ball come over the wall, it was already too late.

Re: Payets freekick
I think having no wall is only of benefit is the free kick is
35+ yards out.

Much nearer and the taker has the option of absolutely belting the ball, with a much higher percentage of scoring.

Re: Payets freekick
If the second attacker is 1cm behind the ball, he's onside, even if the defenders are on the half way line.

I can't believe I had to say that.

Jonah, you must be making yourself very unclear, or you've just had a shocker.

Re: Payets freekick
No, you're quite right Baggins. From 20 yards out you'd ALWAYS have a wall.

But if you're a little further out, IE not quite in "just smash it in" range then not having a wall might work.

I've also thought the same even when they're not shooting directly from the free-kick... 30 yards + out. Why would you always just have all your defenders sticking with the attackers in the box so the taker can just lob it up into the box and it's a lottery.

Keep everyone back just behind the line of the ball and the attackers are all offside if they start in front and play the ball.

Not saying it would work, but having a wall hasn't stopped Payet yet.

Fuck me this is worse than comma trying to talk about football.

I would have thought that you'd have had enough making a cunt of yourself on rugby and cricket threads but no.

Re: Payets freekick
No Sven, the defenders hold a line just upfield of the position of the ball, so that no attacking players can be in front of the ball and in an onside position.

Baggins 12:52 Tue Apr 5
Re: Payets freekick
But East, the answer to that isn't to remove the wall? You honestly think that not having a wall for a free kick from 20 yards is a good idea?

I'd fancy MY chances in that situation. I would imagine a professional player would have a field day. A player like Payet would have a hard on. It would be like a penalty to them. A team who had no wall would immediately start to concede far more goals from free kicks than they do now.

Removing the wall is not the answer I'm afraid. The only real answer is to not give free kicks away on the edge of the box.

Re: Payets freekick
I thought your defenders were 10 yds upfield.
They can't move closer until the kicker touches the ball
They arent getting there before the second player smashes it in.
Except they will all run to the bench and scream abuse at the manager & tell him to stick to indoor cricket

Re: Payets freekick
I've seen how hard and accurately Payet can hit it, and you're right, you are inviting trouble.

But, with Payet in our side, you're inviting trouble just by giving away a free-kick in range anyway, so at least by taking the wall out of the equation you give the keeper a clear view of it.

How many of Payet's goals have come from the keeper being unsighted by the wall?

Most of them I'd suggest....obviously along with outrageous curl, dip and placement too.

Re: Payets freekick
Payet's conversion rate this season has been phenomenal. Would be interested to see the stats. The accuracy is superb, quite a few of them have hit the woodwork on the way in.

Re: Payets freekick
" Ithought the same. No wall, means there's nobody obstructing the keepers view. "

It also means the free kick taker can hammer the ball at goal and there is a good chance it will go in.

I've had this discussion before. Anyone who thinks a wall is a bad idea has absolutely no understanding of how hard and how accurate an elite player can strike a football. If the ball is within 30 yards, you absolutely must have a wall or you are inviting trouble. For all of Payets brilliance, most direct free kicks still end without a goal being scored.

And what, you think that players will see that's what's going to happen and just stand still waiting for it to play out?

East Auckland Hammer 12:33 Tue Apr 5
Re: Payets freekick
Reckon that you'd have a good case for "interfering with play" or interfering with an opponent, given this is the definition from Fifa:

Intefering with an opponent means:
* preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball. For example, by clearly obstrucing the goalkeepers line of vision or movement.
* making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent - the opponent must be resaonably close to the play so that blocking, deceiving or distracting makes a difference.

Sven Roeder 12:30 Tue Apr 5
Re: Payets freekick
And if you put players upfield & at least 10 yds from the ball Payet is going to run up and tap the ball 5 yds forward & Lanzini is going to run from 1 step behind him take a touch and smash it into the net.

Sven Roeder 12:23 Tue Apr 5
Re: Payets freekick
If you don't set a wall I'm going to put 4 attacking players in a wall with one facing you so he can shuffle it from side to side depending on where you stand.
And of course they will drop to the ground on a signal & Payet will drill it in the side you aren't covering.

This kick where he has put it in the keepers side will scare other teams even more as they now know he can put it in either side when they would have been expecting those top left hits like vs Man Utd, Russia. They don't have a fucking clue now.

I thought the same. No wall, means there's nobody obstructing the keepers view.

As for what to do with the players, well, I've wondered that same thing for a while now.

Obviously nobody from the opposition can be in front of the ball, so why do the defence have to have anyone between the ball and the goal either?

Why don't the defenders hold a line slightly upfield of the line of the ball?

Still have to be 10 yards away obviously, but the keeper has a clear line of sight. If they try a little pass, the players are only 10 yards away so can hopefully close him down, if he floats a cross into the box the keeper can come, if he tries to whip something in it will be hard to get anyone there fast enough and whichever option taken, they run the risk of being offside straight away.

Either way, what's Payets record with free kicks so far? 5 from 7 or 8 maybe? Might as well try something different to a wall, because it's damn near a goal every time when he has a crack.

Thanks for the tip. Nigel actually goes "YEAA-" thinking it was well off target....like I did, to be fair.

Good clip from STB Upper too.

Still not tired of watching this gem.
